In August 2025, I began volunteering at the Free Ride Bike Co-op, a community space where members repair and refurbish bicycles to get them back into safe, working condition. I was drawn to the program because it combined my interest in biking with an opportunity to volunteer and work with my hands. Each project at Free Ride begins with a checklist of parts that must be inspected, adjusted, or replaced to ensure a bike can be safely ridden again.
So far, I have worked on a wide range of components, including brakes, chains, shifters, down posts, derailleurs, handlebars, front forks, wheels, and tires. Every bike presents a unique mix of tasks, requiring both problem-solving and attention to detail to bring it back to a reliable condition. Using simple but essential tools like Allen keys, third hands, pliers, and wrenches, I’ve built confidence in handling repairs systematically and thoroughly.
In addition to completing repairs myself, I have also taught others how to perform these fixes. Explaining the process of adjusting a derailleur or replacing a brake cable has helped me become a clearer communicator and a better teacher. Watching people learn these skills and gain independence with their bikes has been one of the most rewarding parts of my experience so far.
Although I’ve only been involved for a short time, Free Ride has already given me the chance to refine both technical and interpersonal skills. I enjoy the combination of working with my hands while also helping others understand the mechanics of their bikes. The collaborative environment encourages patience and support, making every session both productive and enjoyable.
One of the most meaningful experiences has been teaching my girlfriend how to repair a bike from start to finish. At first, she relied on me for guidance, but over time she grew confident enough to complete her own project independently. Watching her succeed reinforced the value of mentorship and made the experience personally fulfilling.
Volunteering at Free Ride has helped me reconnect with practical, hands-on work after a year where I had fewer opportunities to build and repair. It has strengthened my confidence in my mechanical skills while allowing me to contribute to a community-focused cause. While I am still new to the program, my time at Free Ride has already become a meaningful part of my development in both technical ability and personal growth.
