In 2014, I removed the aging hardwood flooring from my parents’ kitchen and replaced it with brand-new hardwood. The project covered a 12' x 14' space, requiring careful planning to complete efficiently while maintaining a high standard of workmanship.
The removal process began with using a hammer, crowbar, and circular saw to take up the existing boards. I worked methodically to avoid damaging the subfloor, ensuring a clean surface for installation. Once the old flooring was out, I sanded and wiped down the subfloor to prepare it for the new material.
Installation involved cutting and fitting the new hardwood boards using a table saw, then securing them in place with a nail gun. The project required precise measuring and fitting to create clean seams and maintain consistent spacing across the entire kitchen.
One of the key challenges was that it was my first time installing hardwood flooring. To get started, I worked alongside my mother, learning basic techniques and understanding best practices before continuing the remainder of the installation on my own. This hands-on training was invaluable in building my confidence and efficiency.
The project was completed in a single day, with my mother taking over the sanding and sealing of the new floor the following day while I returned to work. This division of labor allowed us to keep the project on schedule without sacrificing quality.
This experience strengthened my skills in tool use, precision measuring, and working with natural materials. It also gave me the confidence to take on other home improvement projects involving both demolition and installation work.
