While working with my supervisor, we installed a custom interior column and stair railing system in a residential home. The project required building a structural column and integrating a clean, symmetrical railing into an existing stair opening. The goal was to create a finished architectural element that blended seamlessly into the home while improving both safety and visual appeal. Precision in measurement and finish quality were critical due to the highly visible location of the installation.
The column was constructed using two 2x4s for structural support and wrapped with finish-grade poplar to create a smooth, paint-ready surface. Careful alignment was necessary to ensure the column was plumb and properly integrated into the ceiling trim and stair system. The railing and balusters were measured and spaced evenly to maintain consistent visual rhythm along the staircase. Achieving tight joints and uniform spacing required repeated level checks and fine adjustments during installation.
Once the structural components were installed, I completed all finish work independently. This included sealing seams, caulking joints, filling nail holes, sanding surfaces smooth, and preparing the entire assembly for paint. Clean lines at trim transitions and baluster connections were especially important to achieve a professional finish.
I then primed and painted the column and railing, ensuring even coverage and smooth consistency across all surfaces. Attention to detail during painting was essential to avoid drips, visible brush marks, or uneven sheen in such a prominent area of the home. The finished product appears cohesive with the surrounding trim and architectural elements.
This project demonstrates my ability to assist in structural carpentry while independently completing high-visibility finish work. It reflects precision measuring, finish-grade material handling, and the patience required for detailed sealing and painting. The result is a clean, durable installation that enhances both safety and the overall aesthetic of the space.
